The W portion of Zimbabwe between the Zambezi
and Nimpopo rivers, inhabited by the Ndebele

1889 and occupied 1893 after attacks on white
settlements in Mashonaland; in 1923 it was
included in Southern Rhodesia. It is now
divided into two administrative regions.
Joshua Nkomo was accused of plotting to
overthrow the post-independence government of
Zimbabwe and then expelled from the cabinet
in 1981. Zimbabwe African People's Union
(ZAPU) supporters, mostly drawn from the
Ndebele people, began a loosely organiszed
armed rebellion against the Simbabwe African
National Union (ZANU) government of Robert
Mugabe.
